Christoph Bernhard von Galen (1606-1678)

As Christoph Bernhard von Galen also asserted his ecclesiastical and power-political claims by force of arms, he was nicknamed "Bombenbernd".

Christoph Bernhard was born in the Bisping house near Rinkerode. He attended the Jesuit grammar school in Münster and studied in Cologne, Mainz, Leuven and Bordeaux. After joining the Münster cathedral chapter, he was appointed by the chapter as lord of Lüdinghausen in 1637 (until 1650).

In 1642, he also became cathedral sexton, having already been treasurer from 1630. In 1650, the cathedral chapter elected him prince-bishop of Münster. Von Galen formed changing political alliances and worked intensively on the renewal of the Catholic Church.
