Day of Gardens and Parks

Open gardens in Lüdinghausen and Seppenrade

Under the motto "Living Gardens", many garden owners in Westphalia Lippe open their doors every June and invite visitors to discover their green paradises. The "Day of Gardens and Parks" is all about rare insights into garden culture in the Münsterland region, exchange and encounters as well as enthusiasm for nature. Several gardens in Lüdinghausen and Seppenrade also take part every year and invite visitors to pay them a visit. "It's always a great event," says Gaby Christensen, who is responsible for the organization at Lüdinghausen Marketing and has been opening her own country house garden for many years.

All gardens are open on Sundays, and some gardens can also be visited on the Saturday before. Some gardens offer the opportunity to enjoy a small snack or coffee and cake. Guided tours on various topics are offered at the Biological Center and the Christensen country house garden.

Water as a central theme

"In 2026, the Days of Gardens and Parks will be dedicated to 'Valuable Water'," says Dr. Dorothee Boesler from LWL-Denkmalpflege, Landschafts- und Baukultur in Westfalen. "Water has always played a prominent role in gardens
. It is a design highlight, creates habitats, influences the microclimate and makes gardens an experience for all the senses. At the same time, a conscious approach
to this is becoming increasingly important due to increasing periods of drought and climate change."

Many of the participating gardens show practical ideas on how water can be collected, stored and used creatively in your own garden - for example through near-natural ponds, rainwater harvesting or small water elements that create habitats for animals and improve the microclimate.

Cycle tour for the Day of Gardens and Parks

The best way to discover the participating gardens and parks is by bike. The approximately 26-kilometre cycle tour connects the twelve green oases and is ideal for a day trip.

Gardens in Westphalia

In addition to the countless private gardens, there are over 600 culturally outstanding gardens and parks in Westphalia-Lippe, around half of which are open to visitors all year round. Garden culture is an essential part of our region's identity. The website www.gaerten-in-westfalen.lwl.org provides comprehensive information on over 120 selected parks as well as on all the gardens and parks participating in the "Days of Gardens and Parks in Westphalia-Lippe".
