The lords of Lüdinghausen and Lüdinghausen-Wolff granted the town charter on their own authority. A collection of farms had become what a town was: a trading center of importance with a variety of central functions for the town and surrounding area. Lüdinghausen had a market, was a court of law and had its own town council.
